Vacuum degasser is mainly divided into centrifugal degasser and jet degasser

2023-03-15

A vacuum degasser is an important equipment used in the oil and gas industry to remove gas from drilling fluids or mud. Gas in the drilling mud can cause problems such as reduced drilling efficiency, formation damage, and safety hazards. Vacuum degassers work by reducing the pressure in the drilling mud to create a pressure differential that allows the gas to escape.

There are two main types of vacuum degassers: centrifugal degassers and jet degassers.

(1) Centrifugal Degassers

Centrifugal degassers are also known as horizontal degassers. They work by spinning the drilling mud at high speeds to create a centrifugal force that forces gas bubbles to the surface of the mud. The spinning motion is created by a rotating impeller located inside a cylindrical chamber. As the drilling mud flows through the chamber, the impeller spins, creating a vortex that separates the gas from the liquid.

Centrifugal degassers are efficient at removing large volumes of gas from the drilling mud quickly. They are also compact and require less floor space than other types of degassers. However, they can be more expensive than other types of degassers and may require more maintenance due to the moving parts.

(2) Jet Degassers

Jet degassers, also known as vertical degassers, use a different approach to remove gas from the drilling mud. Instead of spinning the mud, they use a series of nozzles to create a high-velocity stream of mud that is sprayed into a chamber. The high-velocity stream creates a vacuum in the chamber, which draws gas bubbles to the surface of the mud. The gas is then vented to the atmosphere.

Jet degassers are more cost-effective than centrifugal degassers and require less maintenance. They are also more efficient at removing small gas bubbles from the drilling mud. However, they require more floor space than centrifugal degassers and may not be as efficient at removing large volumes of gas from the mud.

(3) Choosing the Right Vacuum Degasser

The choice of vacuum degasser will depend on several factors, including the drilling conditions, the type of drilling fluid being used, and the space available on the rig. In general, centrifugal degassers are better suited for high-volume applications and are more effective at removing large volumes of gas from the drilling mud. Jet degassers are better suited for low-volume applications and are more effective at removing small gas bubbles from the mud.

It is also important to consider the maintenance requirements and cost of each type of degasser. Centrifugal degassers require more maintenance due to the moving parts and may be more expensive to purchase initially. Jet degassers require less maintenance but may require more floor space and may not be as efficient at removing large volumes of gas.

In conclusion, both centrifugal and jet degassers are effective at removing gas from drilling fluids or mud. The choice of degasser will depend on the specific needs of the drilling operation, including the drilling conditions, type of drilling fluid being used, and the space available on the rig. Careful consideration of the maintenance requirements and cost of each type of degasser is also important when choosing the right equipment for the job.
