Working Principle and Application of Drilling Fluid Centrifuges
2025-11-18
In oil and gas drilling, maintaining the stability of the drilling fluid circulation system is essential for safe and efficient operations. As a core piece of solids control equipment, the drilling fluid centrifuge removes fine solid particles, improves mud quality, and protects downhole conditions. With decades of experience, Xi’an Kosun provides advanced decanter centrifuges known for high efficiency, low energy consumption, and stable performance.
Working Principle
A drilling fluid centrifuge uses centrifugal separation technology. When drilling mud enters the rotating bowl, high-speed motion generates strong centrifugal force that separates solids and liquids by density.
Heavier solids move to the bowl wall and are discharged.
Lighter liquid flows out through the overflow port.
By adjusting bowl speed and differential speed, the centrifuge can remove micron-level fine solids, ensuring optimal drilling fluid viscosity and density.

Advantages in Drilling Operations
Unlike shale shakers or desanders, a centrifuge can separate ultra-fine particles, which is crucial in deep wells, horizontal wells, and shale gas drilling. This prevents mud degradation, reduces risks such as wellbore instability, and improves drilling efficiency.
Features of Kosun Centrifuges
High-strength stainless steel bowl
